Project progressed in two phases
The Klaipėda dredging project was divided into two separate contracts. In the first phase, more than 400,000 cubic metres of material was removed from the harbour basin, and the work was completed in January 2025. Immediately afterwards, the second phase began, during which a further 150,000 cubic metres of material was removed from the port entrance.
Project Manager Sami Soikkeli explained that the contract for the second phase was signed after the completion of the first phase. The same equipment was used throughout: trailing suction hopper dredger Freeway, backhoe dredger Magnor, and pusher tugs with barges.
Busy LNG traffic and harsh winter conditions
A particular challenge of the project was working in a busy port area. The dredging site was located near an LNG terminal, where vessels arrived and departed daily. This required precise scheduling and continuous coordination with the port operator.
Another significant challenge involved the transportation of dredged material. The material was transported to a disposal site approximately 11 nautical miles from the port. During the winter works, harsh weather conditions hampered transport operations and placed special demands on equipment and crew.
Boskalis’ Baltic Office was located in Klaipeda, which supported the smooth execution of the project through local presence.
